How I Lost 75 Pounds in Seven Months, Part One

On January 1, 2013, I found myself in the worst condition I’d been in my entire life. I was overweight, over stressed and generally unhappy with the way my life was headed.

Even worse, I had somehow come to believe it was my new lot in life. There was nothing I could do about it. One morning I woke up and realized that somewhere along the way I’d given up control over my life and was just letting life live me.

I began taking back my life. The result? I lost 75 pounds, am happier than I’ve ever been and wake up each morning to a grand and glorious day. Over the next three days, I’m going to share with you how I did it. It’s not magic. It’s actually quite simple.

My first step was to significantly and quickly reduce the major stressers in my life. One of the greatest of those was the work I was doing. It had started out being the love and passion of my life but over the years, it evolved into something that was incongruent with who I am. So, I searched for and changed what I do every day.

I realigned who I am with what I do. That rapidly brought my mind, soul and spirit back into a place of peace, passion and joy.

The Bible teaches us that a man’s gift will make room for him and bring him before great people (Proverbs 18:16). I learned firsthand over the last several years that the only way we will be whole is to be operating in the areas of our giftedness. Otherwise, we’ll be out of sync, resulting in ever-increasing stress in our lives.

When I realized I was out of sync, I also became fully aware of a truth I’ve known for quite some time. When our bodies are under stress, we gain weight. Sorry women, but we seem to be particularly prone to this.

Sometimes it’s because we emotionally eat. I certainly had my share of large bowls of popcorn at the end of a stressful day over the last few years. But there is something even more detrimental. Stress produces a myriad of hormones that rage through the body. Not only does it result in packing on the pounds, but they cause heart problems, joint inflammation, fatigue, digestive issues and a host of other ailments.

So, I knew I had to make a change. I eliminated the work I was doing that produced so much stress in my life.

You may be working at a job that is very stressful, out of your realm of giftedness and produces no joy whatsoever. Am I suggesting you walk away from it? Well, at some point, YES! Perhaps not today but you definitely need to design and implement a plan of escape. You simply must align yourself with what YOU are destined to do.

Take some time to yourself and figure out what you could do to align yourself with your gifts. Then, develop a plan not to escape from where you are right now, but to escape to your new place in the world.

Tomorrow I’ll share the second thing I did to lose 75 pounds in seven months.

Is your life filled with stress? Did you find a way to move out of that and into something different? Share it here!

Great post! And so on target. And it takes courage to walk away from those things that stress us out...especially if it's our livelihood.
